Pradaxa is a blood-thinning drug manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim Inc., used to decrease the risk of strokes and embolisms in patients with atrial fibrillation. It was introduced to the market in 2010, as an alternative to competitor blood-thinner warfarin, which had been on the market for the past 60 years.
Pradaxa was marketed as an improvement over warfarin because it had fewer restrictions for patients. However, if it causes uncontrolled bleeding in patients, there is no easy method to reverse the drug’s anticoagulant properties, leading to severe side effects and deaths. All blood-thinner drugs carry a risk of causing bleeding in patients, but the effects of an anticoagulant like warfarin can be controlled with a dosage of Vitamin K.
The dangerous lack of an antidote to Pradaxa bleeding properties is likely what lead to the staggering amounts of patients who suffered from Pradaxa injuries. In 2011, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration have received more than 540 reports of Pradaxa deaths and 3,781 reports of Pradaxa side effects, the highest of any drug that year.
Recently, the FDA issued a contraindication for Pradaxa, stating that it should not be prescribed to patients with mechanical heart valves. The contraindication followed the results of the RE-ALIGN study, which was terminated prematurely because it found that Pradaxa users were more prone to strokes, heart attacks and blood clots on the mechanical heart valves than warfarin users.
